Russian social media: recent events and current opportunities

Social media in Russia has long offered wide opportunities for targeted advertising and interaction with customers, allowing companies to reach even highly specialized target audiences. Let's take a look at how the media landscape has been changing lately.

According to the recent Mediascope study, the audience of Russia’s most used social network VK grew as follows: in 2021 there were 76 million visitors per month, in 2023 the number rose to 89.2 million. VK advertising possibilities keep growing by scale and by technology, and constantly evolving and improving.

Telegram has almost reached the VK level in terms of monthly coverage. In October 2021, Telegram's audience reached 50.8 million people, while in October 2023 this increased to 82.3 million users. Since Telegram is constantly developing active cooperation with Yandex services, currently placing advertisements has become much easier and more convenient.

Despite the fact that in 2022 TikTok limited the downloading of content from Russia, the audience of this service continues to grow and has increased to 67.7 million per month.

Odnoklassniki social media also showed a slight increase in audience (from 46 million in 2020 to 50 million in 2023) and remains one of the most popular services.

Since the blocking was introduced in 2022, Instagram* and Facebook* have lost 37 million and 23 million users respectively. Targeted advertising in these services is still a very effective way to reach the Russian market and find customers, but its placement may cause some difficulties for foreign advertisers. If you have a plan to conquer the market, it makes sense to seek help from specialists in the field.
